What Makes Moon Lit Candles Sustainable?

There’s nothing more satisfying than a hot drink in a treasured mug, a crystal nearby, and your favorite scent slowly filling the room. Ritual becomes even sweeter when the objects we use are thoughtfully made and kind to the environment.

Moon Lit organic soy wax candles are hand-poured in small batches with intention, using thoughtfully sourced materials and a continual effort to strive toward zero waste. Sustainability isn’t a trend for me—it’s a practice, and one I return to with every batch.

Each candle is vegan & cruelty-free, gluten-free, free from parabens and phthalates and made without added toxins.

Not Every Candle Burns The Same Flame

Candles introduce light and fragrance into our spaces—but not all candles are created equally.

Many mass-market candles are made with paraffin wax and heavily synthetic fragrance blends. All smoke contains carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and particulate matter (soot). Paraffin is petroleum-derived, and when burned can produce higher levels of soot and unwanted byproducts. Add artificial dyes and fragrance additives, and suddenly that “starburst sunrise” scent doesn’t feel quite so sunny.

At Moon Lit by Britt, I choose materials with simplicity and transparency in mind. Just like reading ingredient labels on food, what you burn in your home should feel intentional and considered.

When used mindfully and in moderation, flame and scent have been used for centuries in spiritual and cultural practices to support grounding, reflection, and ritual. My goal is to offer candles that feel grounding and add a touch of magic to your space.

Cotton & Wood Wicks

Because not every flame behaves the same.

Different wicks create different experiences, and both have a place in ritual. I craft my candles using a variety of wood and cotton core wicks.

Cotton Wicks

  • Traditional, steady flame

  • Great for longer, meditative burns

Wood Wicks

  • Soft crackle and wider flame

  • Require a bit more maintenance

  • Thrive with shorter, intentional burn sessions

Both wick types are carefully tested with their vessel and wax pairing to ensure a balanced burn when used properly.

Conscious Consumerism & Circular Practice

Zero waste is not perfection—it’s a redesign of resources.

I strive to minimize waste through circular production, reuse, and upcycling whenever possible. That means making thoughtful decisions at every stage of creation, from sourcing to packaging.

One person’s “trash” is often my creative starting point.

How often have you finished the last bit of jam and toyed with the idea of reusing the jar, only to let it collect dust and toast crumbs at the back of your cupboard?

Materials and Making Practices

1. Jars

I’m the gal around the neighborhood collecting your trash. I scour cupboards and thrift shops for heat-safe vessels, upcycle spent candle jars, and reuse my own materials.

I use recycled and reusable containers whenever possible, fully sanitized and repurposed with care. Anything I cannot use is donated or passed along in my local Buy Nothing group.

After burning, jars can be cleaned and reused in your own home: here is a simple guide to re-purposing your jars!

2. Wicks

Don’t forget to recycle the tab once you’re done!

I use cotton wicks that are free from added metals like lead or zinc. I use all natural wood wicks that are carcinogen-free, sustainably made, and biodegradable.

Wick tabs can be recycled once removed.

3. Wax

All candles are made with soy wax, which is biodegradable, slow-burning, and easy to clean with soap and water. Soy wax burns at a lower temperature than paraffin, resulting in a longer-lasting candle when cared for properly.

4. Oils

I prioritize thoughtfully sourced fragrance and essential oil blends that are paraben and phthalate-free and selected with safety and performance in mind. When using essential oils, I closely monitor temperatures and flashpoints to ensure safe incorporation.

The oils I choose don't allow:

  • Carcinogens (materials known or thought to cause cancer)
  • Mutagens (materials that change the DNA of a cell, harming the cell and causing diseases like cancer)
  • Reproductive toxins (toxins that adversely affect reproductive organs and increase the risk of birth defects)
  • Acute toxins (toxins that can cause adverse effects from a single exposure. Generally, this would be accidental exposure like spillage or ingestion)

5. Crystals and Stones

Crystals are sourced from eco-conscious suppliers or gifted pieces, chosen with care for energetic and aesthetic harmony.

6. Packaging

Packaging materials are reused and repurposed whenever possible—from padded mailers to packing materials. Any packing peanuts used are biodegradable, and I encourage continued reuse at home.

Each candle includes a recycled-paper note sharing the story of your purchase. Labels are recyclable and produced in-house to reduce excess waste.

7.  Labels

Each candle includes a recycled-paper note sharing the story of your purchase. Labels are recyclable and produced in-house to reduce excess waste.

Once you have burned through a Moon Lit candle (or any candle of your choice!), wax can be removed with heat, and jars can be cleaned and reused for any household purposes.

Candles ask for participation. With proper care—wick trimming, mindful burn times, and safe placement—you’ll get a cleaner burn, a longer life, and a better experience overall.

Always burn responsibly.
Always tend your flame with care.

Thank you for choosing ritual with intention.
